For years, many assumed that flight required more lift and more power than the human body alone could provide (although the admonitions did little to stop myriad failed attempts). But inventors persisted. Aircraft fly using three basic configurations: fixed wing, flapping wing, and rotors. In the last 50 years, inventors have conquered fixed-wing and flapping flight. Now they are on the verge of overcoming the greatest challenge yet: vertical take-off.

To fly a human-powered helicopter, a pilot would likely have to produce 500 watts of power. Even the fittest pilot could not sustain that ‘output’, says Antonio Filippone, an aeronautical engineer at the University of Manchester in England who has published two papers analyzing theoretical human-powered helicopters. “You can lift off,” he says, “But for more than a few seconds, it is not possible.” We’ve heard that sort of thing before.

Dutchman Flaps His Arms And Flies - Jarno Smeets has been working for several months on his Human Bird Wings project -- assembling long nylon wings powered by outrunner motors. Wii arm-waving control system -- and now -- according to the video he's just published -- they work! Man can fly! Some people are somewhat skeptical that little motors, shallow flapping, and trotting along a flat field are enough to launch a tall Dutchman into the air. ORNITHOPTER - Flapping-wing flight: The Challenge: Small animals such as hummingbirds beat their wings fast enough to stay aloft entirely from flapping, pushing more air down than they do up and creating a net upward pressure. But at large scales, it’s difficult to beat quickly enough to remain in the air. Bigger flappers, therefore, require a boost from forward thrust. Think of an engine pushing forward a flapping-wing plane,  ornithopter.

The Solution/Penyelesaian: Larger kepak sayap burung, tetapi ia juga twist ke hadapan dan kembali seolah-olah jiggling sebuah doorknob, yang menghasilkan tujahan tambahan ke hadapan. The Solution: Larger birds’ wings flap, but they also twist forward and back as if jiggling a doorknob, which generates extra forward thrust. So as a graduate student at the University of Toronto, aeronautical engineer Todd Reichert and fellow students designed their craft, named Snowbird, with wings that both flap up and down and twist 10 degrees. They used computer simulations to fine-tune their design. And they gave Snowbird a wide, 105-foot wingspan and employed carbon fibre and Kevlar to keep it light. A person generates power in the 94-pound craft using a leg press similar to those found in gyms.

On August 2, 2010, on a field in Ontario, a car towed the craft forward until it glided into the air. Then the car stopped towing. As Reichert worked the leg press, the Snowbird flapped its wings and flew on its own at a height of 11 feet for 19.3 seconds, traveling 475 feet.

When the pressure below the craft overcomes the pressure above it, there is a net upward force. Most planes use engines to get enough forward motion, but people can’t propel a vehicle nearly as fast.

The Solution /Penyelesaian: Secara umum, lagi sayap, lif lagi. The Solution: In general, the longer the wings, the more lift. In the early ’60s, Southampton University undergraduates built a 130-pound craft with an 80-foot-wingspan and a bicycle-style transmission connected to a propeller. It flew a third of a mile but had significant steering problems. In 1977, engineer Paul MacCready designed the Gossamer Condor, a 70-pound aluminium and plastic craft with a canard - an airfoil on a boom in front of the fuselage. It was more manoeuvrable than its predecessors and flew in a figure eight around markers a half-mile apart, winning the Royal Aeronautical Society’s prize for the first controlled and sustained human-powered flight. There’s still room for improvement. For example, engineers have refurbished the ’90s Airglow (seen above) with bent wingtips and curvier wings - improvements that stabilize it during turns.

Aeronautical engineer Neal Saiki, who designed the first human-powered helicopter to lift off in 1989, is back with a new craft: theUpturn. A pilot pedals to spin its single, 85-foot-wide rotor with four blades, two of which have propellers at their ends, which help with stability. Each blade also has an adjustable flap and a sensor to detect vibration and balance, and Saiki’s software tweaks the flaps’ angles in real time to compensate for wobbles. In June, a pilot lifted the Upturn two feet for about 10 seconds.

The competition is still heating up. Snowbird co-designer Todd Reichert officially registered for the helicopter prize this July with a new group, but it hasn’t yet released a full design of its quadcopter. Maryland continues to improve its craft. Saiki aims to use a stronger pilot. And team gravity will be fighting all of them every step of the way.

APEC leaders pose for group photo . . .

Selepas rasmi bahagian Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum berakhir pada hari Ahad, pemimpin ekonomi rantau ini dizahirkan untuk gambar kumpulan tradisional. Tradisi lama ini dipanggil "Gambar keluarga" dan sebelum pemimpin memakai pakaian kebangsaan negara tuan rumah. Tetapi pada tahun-tahun kebelakangan ini mereka telah biasanya memakai pakaian biasa. Bandar Rusia Timur Jauh Vladivostok menganjurkan forum APEC tahun ini.

After the official part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum came to an end on Sunday, leaders of the region's economies posed for a traditional group photo. This long-standing tradition is called the "family photo" and previously leaders wore the national costumes of the host country. But in recent years they have usually donned ordinary clothes. Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam hari ini melahirkan rasa puas hati beliau di atas penekanan berterusan ke atas keselamatan makanan di rantau APEC, terutama dengan pembentukan terkini Perkongsian Polisi APEC Mengenai Jaminan Makanan.

Dalam menyampaikan titah di Sesi ‘Retreat’ APEC 20 Ke-2 Mesyuarat Pemimpin Ekonomi 2012, Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda berkata perkongsian baru ini adalah satu pencapaian yang agak luar biasa untuk blok 21-negara.

Pada mesyuarat yang diadakan di Timur Jauh Universiti Persekutuan pada pulau Russkiy, raja berkata ini akan membolehkan negara anggota untuk menangani isu ini dengan cara yang lebih menyeluruh, dengan membuka saluran komunikasi antara pembekal dalam industri pengguna dan orang-orang di rantau ini.

Menurut kenyataan akhbar oleh Pejabat Perdana Menteri, ia memetik Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda sebagai berkata Brunei juga telah cuba untuk mencontohi proses ini dengan bercakap kepada orang yang relevan dalam negara serta perkongsian rapat di luar negara, antara lain.

Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda berkata, satu contoh adalah melalui ‘ASEAN Plus Three’ Beras Kecemasan Reserve (APTERR) yang ASEAN telah dibangunkan dengan China, Jepun dan Korea, untuk belajar daripada satu sama lain melalui pemindahan teknologi dan pertukaran pembinaan kapasiti.

Merujuk kepada kemampanan pertanian dan marin, Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda percaya APEC berada di landasan yang betul.

Sultan berkata kebimbangan yang berkaitan dengan mereka telah dikaitkan dengan agenda keutamaan Indonesia tahun depan pada ‘Blue Ekonomi’ untuk menangani pemuliharaan sumber marin dan pesisir pantai.

Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda kemudiannya berkata, dia tidak sabar untuk cadangan Kumpulan Dasar APEC, supaya APEC boleh tampil dengan strategi yang komprehensif mengenai keselamatan makanan menjelang tahun 2020 yang juga akan menangani masalah semasa zaman bencana alam.

Inovasi, raja berkata dipandu oleh Perkongsian Awam-Swasta yang kukuh (PPP) mencipta persaingan merentasi pelbagai sektor industri dan yang paling penting, menjana tenaga kerja yang berpendidikan tinggi dan mahir untuk ekonomi.

Bagi Negara Brunei Darussalam, Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda menekankan bahawa perkongsian itu adalah salah satu fokus 'Rancangan Pembangunan Negara yang bertujuan untuk menggalakkan, antara lain, inovasi dalam Perusahaan Kecil dan Sederhana (PKS) dan juga di kalangan belia melalui kerjasama pendidikan dalam sokongan penyelidik , pencipta dan usahawan.

Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda melahirkan kepuasan untuk belajar bahawa beberapa inisiatif APEC mengenai perkara ini telah ditendang luar sejak pemimpin bertemu di Hawaii pada tahun lepas, seperti keputusan untuk memegang mesyuarat penasihat sains ketua tahun depan di Indonesia dan cadangan sendiri Rusia pada nano-teknologi untuk kecekapan tenaga , menggalakkan kerjasama rentas sempadan pendidikan dan menubuhkan Perkongsian Dasar mengenai Inovasi.

Semua langkah-langkah ini akan menyumbang kepada produktiviti Asia-Pasifik dan mengukuhkan daya saingnya, Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda berkata.

Berikutan tamatnya mesyuarat, Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda dan pemimpin lain berkumpul untuk foto keluarga dengan APEC 2012 pemimpin latar belakang.

Para pemimpin kemudiannya untuk makan tengah hari bekerja, di mana mereka membincangkan keadaan ekonomi semasa di seluruh DUNIA dengan kehadiran Pengarah Urusan Tabung Kewangan Antarabangsa dan Bank Dunia Presiden.

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday expressed his satisfaction over the continued emphasis on food security in the APEC region, especially with the recent formation of the APEC Policy Partnership on Food Security.

In delivering a titah at the Second Retreat Session of the 20th APEC 2012 Economic Leaders' meeting, His Majesty said this new partnership was quite a remarkable achievement for 21-nations' bloc.

At the meeting held at the Far East Federal University on Russkiy Island, the monarch said this would enable member countries to address the issue in a more holistic manner, by opening up a channel of communication between the suppliers in the industry to the consumers and the people in the region.

According to a press statement by the Prime Minister's Office, it quoted His Majesty as saying Brunei was also trying to emulate this process by speaking to relevant people domestically as well as close partnerships abroad, among others.

His Majesty said one example was through the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) which ASEAN has developed with China, Japan and Korea, in order to learn from one another through technology transfers and capacity building exchanges.

With regards to agriculture and marine sustainability, His Majesty believed APEC was on the right track.

The Sultan said concerns relating to them were linked with Indonesia's priority agenda next year on the Blue Economy to tackle marine and coastal resources conservation.

His Majesty then said he was looking forward to the recommendations of the APEC Policy Group, so that APEC can come up with a comprehensive strategy on food security by 2020 which will also tackle the problem during times of natural disasters.

On innovation, the monarch said being driven by strong Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) created competition across various industry sectors and most importantly, generates a highly educated and skilled workforce for economies.

For Brunei Darussalam, His Majesty highlighted that such partnerships were one of the focus' of the National Development Plan which seeks to promote, amongst others, innovation in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and also in the youth through education cooperation in support of researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs.

His Majesty expressed satisfaction to learn that several APEC initiatives on this have kicked off since leaders met in Hawaii last year, such as the decision to hold the meeting of chief science advisors next year in Indonesia and Russia's own proposals on nano-technologies for energy efficiency, promoting cross-border education cooperation and setting up of the Policy Partnership on Innovation.

All of these steps will contribute to the Asia-Pacific's productivity and strengthen its competitiveness, His Majesty said.

Following the conclusion of the meeting, His Majesty and other leaders gathered for a family photo with the APEC 2012 leaders backdrop.

The leaders then proceeded to a working lunch, where they discussed the current economic situation around the world with the presence of the Managing Director of International Monetary Fund and the President of the World Bank.
